作品衍生自杨圆圆的正在进行中的电影长片《女人世界》，由影像装置与现场表演构成，表演于2019年9月12日-9月14日发生在上海外滩美术馆的RAM HIGHLIGHT，此次展出影像部分作品，表演者包括旧金山华埠夜总会的退役舞者余金巧（Coby Yee）与她的爱人/搭档史蒂芬·金，以及由退役舞者方美仙成立的舞蹈团体都板街舞团（Grant Avenue Follies）。作品名源于都板街舞团策划的一出晚餐剧“紫禁城夜总会的谋杀”。

The video work is from a project derived from Luka Yuanyuan Yang’s feature film Women’s World, composed with video, installation and live performance. The performance took place during September 12th – September 14th, 2019 at Rockbund Art Museum’s RAM HIGHLIGHT 2019, featuring Coby Yee, a 93-year old dance icon from San Francisco Chinatown, with her lover/dance partner Stephen King, and Grant Avenue Follie – a senior dance troupe founded by a retired nightclub dancer Cynthia Yee. The title is inspired by dinner play Murder of the Forbidden City Nightclub produced by Grant Avenue Follies.

影片由一场旧金山中国城步行之旅展开：随着40年代奥森·威尔士的电影《上海来的女士》走入旧金山中国城最后一家现存的戏院，又从“上海楼”漫步到“紫禁城夜总会”，镜头跟随着华裔舞者方美仙（Cynthia Yee）、历史学家王万力（Wylie Wong）与李萱颐（David Lei）的步伐，踏上一场时空交叠的旅程。

The film opens with a walking tour in San Francisco Chinatown: walking into the last surviving theater following the scene from the 1940s film “Lady from Shanghai” directed by Orson Welles; wandering from “Shanghai Low” to “Forbidden City Nightclub” – the camera follows the pace of Chinese American nightclub dancer Cynthia Yee, historians Wylie Wong and David Lei onto a journey across time and space.

The story of “American Relative” was filmed in San Francisco and Toisan, Guangdong. In the first half of the film, Chinese-American Pat Chu Nishimoto reveals the secret that her father, who died many years ago, had hidden for long time. In 1980, when mainland China was reforming and opening up, her family came to her father’s hometown Toisan for the first time, and surprisingly discovered that they have a family of half-relatives there. In the second half of the film, her Chinese relatives tell the story of their ancestral house. Today, in the process of urbanization in China, the architecture in Toisan that tells story of hardships of the diaspora Chinese are rapidly  disappearing…

《勿街粤曲》拍摄了三位生活在纽约的粤剧爱好者，他们当中有中国大陆迁来的粤剧世家，有自幼来纽约的香港移民，也有从古巴移居美国的华裔难民。他们在多次漂泊无定的迁移中探寻身份，在粤剧表演中得到栖息。从回望历史，到记录当下，杨圆圆在《中国城佚事》到《勿街粤曲》两件作品中梳理了粤曲文化在海外是如何对离散族群产生跨越代际的影响。

“Cantonese Tunes on Mott Street” filmed three Cantonese opera lovers living in New York. Shirley, born in Cantonese opera families who immigrated from mainland China; Rosa, Hong Kong immigrant who came to New York since childhood; Wenxiang, Chinese refugee who immigrated to the United States from Cuba. They found their habitat in Cantonese opera performances.

In “Tales of Chinatown”(2019) and “Cantonese Tunes on Mott Street”(2022), Luka Yuanyuan Yang traces the past and now of Cantonese opera fin the American culture and how it has had a cross-generational impact on diaspora Chinese.

短片《生之环》中，“蛇环”（Ouroboros）的图腾作为万物互联的符号，串联了亦真亦幻的世间万物——真实与虚拟的丛林、人类的指纹与树木的年轮、海浪与人潮。影片自身的结构也是一个环，开头结尾都是睡梦中的脸，可以不断巡回播放。梦的结束亦是梦的开始，人世如梦，似梦似醒。

In the short film “The Ring of Life”, the totem of the “snake ring” (Ouroboros) serves as a symbol of the interconnection of all things, connecting real and imaginary things in the world – forests, human fingerprints, tree rings, ocean waves and crowds… The narrative structure of the film itself is also a loop which can be played continuously, with a girl’s sleeping faces at the beginning and end of the film. The end of one dream is also the beginning of another dream.

杨圆圆在2020年2月创作的这段半虚构的“科幻敌托邦式的”视觉日志，是对即将于2020年3月1日开始执行的《网络信息内容生态管理新规》的回应。

92岁的柯比经历了旧金山华埠夜总会年代，是一名退役的舞者，74岁史蒂芬经历了美国60年代反战运动，曾是一名实验电影导演，两个截然不同的个体晚年在舞池相爱。柯比是史蒂芬的造型师，她更新了史蒂芬的衣橱，但凡一同外出，他们从头到脚都是柯比制作的情侣装；史蒂芬则是柯比的档案管理员，她毕生积攒的舞者职业照不仅令他着迷，甚至重燃了他的创作动力。在拉斯维加斯终演来临前，柯比与史蒂芬开始准备二人谢幕之舞。

Coby Yee, a 92-year-old retired nightclub dancer and icon from San Francisco Chinatown’s golden age, and Stephen King, a man 20 years her junior who has been an experimental filmmaker since the 1960s anti-war movement. They have found an unlikely love in each other through matching outfits, dance, and art.  Coby updated Stephen’s wardrobe soon after they started dating, she hand-makes all of their clothes and ensures that they never leave the house without matching outfits from head to toe. Stephen has become Coby’s personal archivist, he creates photo albums and collages constructed from glamorous images of Coby, from the past and the present. As their final performance in Las Vegas approaches, Coby and Stephen start to prepare their last dance on the curtain call.

《幽灵写生》讲述了一个从遗失电影中走出的女性角色，如幽灵般在世间徘徊，试图寻找自己的过去。在堆积着废弃胶片的老电影片场，她遇到了同样被现代主义电影史所遗忘的其他角色。在她们诞生的年代，电影尚未被数字化，随着时间流逝，承载她们存在的胶片被遗弃。艺术家从水滴与海洋的关系中获得启发，联系到AI图像生成技术对海量图片的学习与再创。在这片电影图像的坟场与新时代像素海洋的交织中，这位幽灵角色得以通过AI重新写生自己的记忆，构建属于她的那部已然遗失的电影。

Ghost Sketch tells the story of a female character who emerges from a lost film, wandering like a ghost in search of her past. In an old film studio filled with discarded film reels, she encounters other characters similarly forgotten by modernist film history. Born in an era before digitization, their existence faded as the film strips that once held them were abandoned. Inspired by the relationship between water drops and the ocean, the artist draws parallel to how AI image generation technology learns from and recreates vast seas of images. In this intersection between the graveyard of film images and the ocean of pixels in the new era, the ghost character is able to sketch her memories through AI, reconstructing that lost film that belongs to her.

On November 21, 1990, my father captured me with a video camera for the first time. It’s like a time capsule, carrying a period of time that I have personally experienced without any memory. On August 22, 2020, you are a dark area of 0.3 x 0.4 x 0.3cm on your first photograph. I think about you all the time, even though I can’t see you. These 40 weeks are a period of time that you and I have experienced together, but cannot be remembered by you in the future. I hope to keep this memory for you.

尽管在旧金山渡过了大半生，78岁的吴锡锡始终将自己视为“来自上海的女士”。而她101岁的失忆母亲，每天会在口中喃喃自语 “这是哪里？我在上海吗？”  找第三任丈夫时，她甚至只考虑来自上海的男人。在电影中，吴锡锡分享了自己与上海前夫的爱情日记，讲述了二人跨越语言与地理限制、在千禧年通过交友网站结下的爱情故事。

Despite living in San Francisco for her entire adult life, the 78-year-old Ceecee Wu has always considered herself as “the lady from Shanghai”, so does her 101-year-old mother with amnesia who always muttered “Where is this? Am I in Shanghai?”   In this film, Ceecee shares a love journal between her and her ex-husband from Shanghai, the two met each other through a dating website in the millennium and formed a relationship that defeats the obstacle of language and geographical boundaries.
